Dering Hall Executive Editor Dennis Sarlo interviewed celebrated interior designer and author Mark Epstein at Farrow & Ball Wednesday afternoon in an engaging, entertaining and informative conversation at Farrow & Ball. The well-attended event was part of the D&D Fall Market and was followed by a book signing of Mark Epstein Designs.

Dennis guided the dynamic conversation on everything from handling difficult clients to the artistry behind tabletop decorations. A theme both returned to was the importance of making your client’s home unique and reflective of their own personality. “What makes your client’s space their own is accesssories,” said Epstein. He went onto say that a designer should strive to bring the client’s personality into every room.

Epstein spoke about the importance of allocating time on design, rather than the presentation to clients, and took questions from both Dennis and the audience on taking risks, entertaining, and adhering design to the surrounding area.

When tackling difficult clients, Epstein recommended educating clients on why you are making certain choices and to ask that clients trust your expertise. When nothing else works, he said to “put your money where your mouth is,” and relayed a story of working with a client who was hesitant on his choice of wall color. He promised this client that if they weren’t satisfied with the finished room, he would pay himself to have it repainted.

The event was educational, conversational and entertaining. It was a great addition to the Fall Market at the D+D. If you are interested in future Dering Hall events, sign up for our newsletter here.
